Double gutshot straight draw: eight outs

Two holes, two ranks that fill them. It has as many outs as an open-ended straight draw. Players miss it because the cards are not in a row.

You
Five, seven, eight, nine, jack. Two ranks finish a straight.

Count the outs

You hold 97. The flop is J85.

  • A ten makes seven to jack. Four tens.
  • A six makes five to nine. Four sixes.
  • Four plus four is 8 outs.

How to spot one

Look for five ranks spread over seven, like five to jack here. If only two ranks are missing from that stretch, and each one finishes five in a row, you have two gutshots. Do not stop at the first one you find. That mistake costs you half your outs.

Turn to river, one card17.4%16%

These are the same numbers as an open-ended straight draw. Same outs, same odds.

Which bets you can call

He betsPriceOne cardHe is all in
a third of the pot20.0%foldcall
half the pot25.0%foldcall
two thirds of the pot28.6%foldcall
the pot33.3%foldfold

With one card to come, the price alone lets you call a bet up to about 26% of the pot.

Which outs are clean

When the six comes, nobody can beat your straight. When the ten comes, 12 of the two-card hands he could hold have a bigger one: a queen with a nine. So 4 of your outs are clean.

The hidden shape helps you too. A player who sees the board as ragged may not put you on a straight, and may pay you after you hit.

Against top pair

Against JQ, every turn and river dealt, the double gutshot wins 33.0%.
