How to calculate pot odds at the table
Your call, divided by the pot after your call. That is the whole formula. The rest of this page is where people trip on it.
The formula, with one example
The pot is 100. Your opponent bets 50. It costs you 50 to call.
- Pot after your call: 100 + 50 + 50 = 200.
- Price: 50 divided by 200 = 25%.
- You need to win at least a quarter of the time for the call to break even.
The most-asked question about pot odds is whether your own call goes in the pot before you divide. It does. You are risking 50 to win what is there, plus what he bet, plus your own 50 back.
Say the price as a percentage. Then it lines up with your chance to hit, which is also a percentage, and you compare two numbers instead of converting ratios in your head.
The price by bet size
Bet sizes repeat, so the prices repeat. These five cover most of what you will face.
| He bets | You need to win |
|---|---|
| A third of the pot | 20.0% |
| Half the pot | 25.0% |
| Two thirds of the pot | 28.6% |
| The pot | 33.3% |
| Twice the pot | 40.0% |
Pot odds calculator
Put in the pot, the bet and your outs. It shows the price, your chance to hit and whether the price is right.
Then compare it with your chance to hit
The price is half of the decision. The other half is how often you win. For a draw, that comes from your outs.
Same pot: 100, he bets 50, so the price is 25%. You have a flush draw on the flop: 9 outs.
- He will bet the turn too, so you see one card: 19.1%. Less than 25%. Fold.
- He is all in, so you see both cards: 35.0%. More than 25%. Call.
Same cards, same bet. A different answer, because of how many cards you get to see.
The rule of 2 and 4 gets you close to those numbers in your head. Against a made hand, the honest number is your equity.
Two things that catch people
- Extra callers behind you do not fix the price the way people expect. They change how often you win, and they can raise.
- Implied odds are real: money you win later when you hit. They are also the excuse people reach for after they have already decided to call. Count them only when there is money behind and he will pay you.
Off the Felt drills the price until you read it in a second, before the dealer looks at you.
